Water Safety Quiz
Question #5: My friend across the bay
from our cabin fishes the Cullen Chain a lot. He almost always returns
home with a boat load of fish, most of which he fillets and cooks.
One thing that bothers me though, is his fish catching and cleaning habits.
I've seen him many times using three or four fishing poles, some with several
lures attached at different levels on the line. I don't want to be
nosy, but when I discussed this with him, he told me he does it that way
to scare off the perch and only catch bullheads and "dog fish". Another
thing is the method he uses to dispose of fish entrails after he cleans
them. I've seen him return to the lake and dump the fish cleaning
waste right into the water. Other times, he buries the waste behind
his cabin and the mound there is beginning to resemble the great pyramid.
The smell from his property is really getting bad. What would you
suggest I do about all of this?
Answer: Your neighbor
sounds like a real fun guy! A real "friend of the lakes" type.
Here's what we recommend; When you see your neighbor in his boat ready
to catch fish next time, in a loud and commanding voice say "Yes Mr. DNR
conservation officer, it IS a beautiful day, isn't it"! You
should now see your neighbor quickly scrambling to bring himself back to
some degree of legality. Regarding the large mound where your neighbor
is burying fish waste, you may want to inform him that the Historical preservation
groups in this area would be only too happy to designate that ol' mound
as a potential area artifact pending a full scale archeological dig with
the "BIG" equipment! He just may get the message and reform himself
right before your eyes.
| Note: You may want to check the content found in this web
site regarding catch and release techniques. See the DNR materials
offered on the site. Remind your neighbor that burying ANY waste
of any kind is illegal in Minnesota and that all property owners must practice
an acceptable method of waste disposal. Thanks! |
